The Only Testimony That Saves (A Meditation on Psalm 119:94-95)

I am yours; save me, for I have sought your precepts. The wicked lie in wait to destroy me, but I consider your testimonies. Psalm 119:94-95

Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes”.  Again, Jesus says, “abide in me, and I in you.  As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.”  Do you have the same abiding faith as the psalmist to declare boldly your allegiance to the King of Kings, “I am yours”?  If I may, let me ask that question differently – would the King of Kings agree and say, “you are mine”?  Who is this that calls us to abide in his precepts and to diligently consider His testimonies?  Who is this that allows us to confidently proclaim with the Apostle Paul, that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39)?  Come what wickedness awaits to destroy us, nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord!

Do not leave that question, “who is this,” unanswered today.  Some of you may be deep in the distortion of the world, with desires and affections focused on this life - soldiers caught up in civilian affairs, close to forgetting the sound of the King’s voice, marred in unrepentant sin.  Let me remind you who this is that beckons, with the desperation of eternity on my lips.

He is the Lord of Lords - He created all that exists by the mere power of His speech.  He rules the heavens and created every angel, myriads upon myriads of them – “thousands upon thousands”. He miraculously called Noah to build an ark and preserved his family while in perfect justice He destroyed every evil creature that walked the face of the earth through a world-wide flood.  He put a bow of light in the sky just to make a promise.  He created diversity, language and the nations, dispersing all of humanity throughout the earth at the tower of babel.  He confused the language of man that day for the purposes of His kingdom, and through the Holy Spirit He ordained the power of language on earth to proclaim the gospel at the day of Pentecost.  He called Abraham out of a land of pagans.  He destroyed entire cities with raining fire.  He made Sarah’s dead womb do the humanly impossible and miraculously bring forth life.  Our God is the great I AM!

He sustained His people through generations of slavery and brought them out of Egypt.  He’s the burning bush. He commands plagues of His choosing, He is the pillar of cloud by day, He is the pillar of fire by night. He controls the oceans and the waters of the Earth by the sound of His voice – saving His people and destroying their enemies.  With mind-blowing fire, smoke, and quaking He envelopes entire mountains with His presence. He is Adonai, He is Jehovah-Jireh, He is Jehovah-Rapha, He is El Shaddai, He is YHWH!  He is the Commander of the Lord’s armies!  Even more, He is the one who holds the sun to stand in its place at the command of His voice.  He commands whales in order to bring salvation to cities like Nineveh. To suit His own purpose, He directs the hearts of Kings, setting them up and taking them down.  He is the one who declares the end from the beginning.  His angels encamp around those who love Him.

He spoke to us through prophets.  He burned the soaking wet offering made by Elijah with fire from heaven, consuming even the rocks, and bringing to ruin the man-made worship of the baal idols.  He is the one who answered Job out of the whirlwind, declaring that He laid the very foundation of earth.  He set the cornerstone Himself and shut in the sea with doors.  He makes the clouds, commands the morning, and causes the dawn to know its place. He created the very gates of death, and the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain.  He makes the ground sprout with grass, and makes the dew, the rain, the ice and the frost.  Before Him ALL mouths are stopped, and all excuses vaporize in shame – ALL knees bow. Our God is a mighty God!

Then in the midst of devastating and complete human failure, God demonstrated His perfect mercy and grace. He spoke again, the final solution for accomplishing what man cannot – heralded in the middle of the fields at night surrounded by the sheep and shepherds – the angels appeared, declaring the King has come!  He is the longsuffering and patient God that breaks through!  He sent His Son once and for all as the perfect sacrifice and covering for our sin. He is the long-awaited Jubilee, incarnate.  Jesus… Jesus!  It’s always been about Jesus.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us!  The God of the universe walked in our shoes, subjected Himself to the flesh and was tempted in every way.  Jesus turned water to wine and made the lame to walk.  Can you picture it?  He caused the blind to see and brought the dead back to life.  Like early labor, creation yearned for the revealing. Even the water worshipped... and Jesus walked on the water!  He commanded the waves and the wind.  Jesus fed 5,000 people with a few loaves of bread and fish.  He healed incurable diseases just through the touch of His garment.  The demons fled at the sound of His voice.  He knew the minds, thoughts, and intentions of the pharisees, Sadducees, and even His own disciples.  He completed the task that Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, the priests, the prophets, and myriads of kings could not. He lived a perfect and holy life, never sinned, and abided in the law of God perfectly. Unlike Adam, Jesus put satan behind Him and prayed to the Father in the garden, not my will, but yours be done.  The wicked laid in wait to destroy him; Satan once more trying to tempt and deceive. One word from the lips of Christ could have brought legions of angels to His rescue, but Jesus resisted sin, to perfection.  He diligently kept the testimonies of God and in His holiness bore the sins of the world, for the joy set before Him, as a ransom for many!

Jesus laid down His life. The curtain separating man from God split in two. The earthquake rocked our planet, and Jesus Christ became the firstborn among many brethren on that miraculous resurrection morning!  He conquered death and took up His own life again to the glory of God – read that again!  In His resurrected body, He even walked and dined with His disciples.  He was seen by hundreds.  Then He took off his flesh and was literally transfigured before the eyes of man and ascended to the Father.  For all of us, who are fully incapable of escaping on our own, He performs open heart surgery and replaces our hearts of stone.  He justifies us through His blood, continues the work that He began in us, and we will one day be glorified with Him through His radical and scandalous grace.  All of His creation longs for this revealing of the sons of God… all of creation is rooting for you in eager expectation!  He is returning again for His church, in triumphant glory.  There will be no mistake, and there will be no escape.  God’s final wrath and judgement will be poured out on the earth as the power of sin and death are destroyed for all time by the power of His might.  Jesus is the only one worthy to open the scroll!

Do you know Him today? Watch out - Seek His precepts – diligently consider His testimonies.  This is the God that saves, and He alone is able.  We can have the confidence of His salvation because of the blood of Jesus through whom we cry, Abba Father… I am yours, save me!  You cannot ignore this God. Everything will burn in His holiness – your money will all burn, your belongings will all burn.  My friend, how important it is that we seek His precepts and consider His testimonies? Your enemy Satan is no doubt lying in wait to destroy you.  None other can save but Jesus, None other. Are you sure you know Him? Would the King of Kings agree and say '“you are mine”!
